Great news from Madison Market:
Effective February 1, to reduce our contribution to the waste stream, the co-op will discontinue the practice of providing free paper and plastic bags. Other establishments that have adopted similar policy have seen a dramatic decrease in patrons’ disposable bag use, and a subsequent increase in their reusable bag use. Paper and plastic bags will still be available at 10 cents per bag, the proceeds from which will be earmarked to support future sustainability efforts. Although the purpose of the fee is to encourage customers and member-owners to curb their bag dependency, for people in a pinch, we will continue to make available our bin of recycled-for-reuse paper and plastic sacks (consider donating your paper and plastic bags instead of introducing them to the recycling system) and, of course, our classy reuable totes (including cloth bags perfect for bulk and produce).
