New polling shows the Green Bag fight is tight but winnable

A new KING TV poll shows the race to approve Referendum 1 is a tightening dead heat: we are leading by 1% with only 7% undecided. But this does not mean we “have it in the bag.” The oil and plastic bag industries have spent over $200,000 and will undoubtedly see these poll numbers and write even more big, out-of-state checks.

We can win this, but to do so we need your help to turn out our strong base of voters and persuade those still on the fence about this progressive, needed legislation. Ballots arrive in the mail in four weeks and are due by August 18.
This is a nationally-watched vote. Seattle’s adoption of the green fee has led the way for other cities to join the movement to curb disposable bag use–including Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., even nearby Edmonds! Yet, if the industries can succeed in their repeal effort here in green Seattle, they will move on to threaten progress around the country.

We have a strong grassroots plan for the final weeks of the campaign, including literature distribution, phone banks and outreach at festivals. Sign up to volunteer or securely donate online today. Every $10 donated allows us to reach dozens of voters with printed campaign literature, and you will reach 15 voters every hour helping us make calls.

  1. I am in Russia currently and most, if not all, stores do not hand out plastic bags. Customers must pay for them. There is no whining and almost everyone at the checkout has their own bag or simply carries out their items without a bag.

I fully support the Green Bag Fee and my company just donated $1,000 to help get this passed the oil companies.

As a naturopathic physician, my goal is to prevent disease, not just treat it.

Given that plastic is an estrogen-mimic, breast cancer is a major risk for those who are exposed to plastics via bottles, food and cookware.

Reducing plastic bags is a major step in weaning us out of plastic altogether.
